DESIGNER MIRANDA BENNETT TALKS WITH US ON HER INSPIRATION AND STYLE

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere: places, feelings, songs, history, travel, art. When I think of older people whom I admire, they are always the ones who keep their sense of adventure and curiosity nourished. That sense of curiosity and openness, not becoming jaded or rigid in my ways, is something that I try and apply to my own work, routines and relationships. Roald Dahl said it better than I ever could: “And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places.”

How does your work influence your style and vice versa?

My work has a huge impact on my style. A large portion of my closet is from my collection, and those pieces that aren't are generally made from peers in my industry. I have always been someone with a very personal connection to what I wear, and very much consider my attire an expression of my inner life - or, as is the case some days, an anecdote to a less than pristine inner life when I am feeling overworked and frayed.

What are your routines for getting ready for the day?

I am not a morning person, so I have to budget a lot of time into my mornings to transition from sleep to productivity. A typical morning is me waking up after my boyfriend but before he's gotten out of bed, so he will usually have a few funny things that he's been dying to share from social media by the time I get my eyes open. Once I'm out of bed, I start the day with a large glass of water with half a lemon to alkalize my body, and try to have that a good 20 minutes before food or tea. Then I'll let the dogs out and throw the ball a little bit while I wait for the kettle to warm. From there the shower, which I always stay in too long. My skin care regimen has expanded the more stress I feel in my life, and is now honestly my favorite part of the morning. The all star of that process is my Aesop B Triple C Face Gel, it's instant hydration, dewy perfection and is the consistency of honey, we call it liquid gold at my house. From there it's breakfast, a bit of yogurt and a sprinkle of granola or a soft boiled egg over rice with sesame seed oil and black tea with cream. I always brush my teeth after eating and before makeup. Then I pack up my lunch, gather the dogs and we all head to the studio.

Flats or heels?

Flats! I really want to be a heels person, especially with being only 5'5", but I usually dress for a 12-14 hour day between work and afterwork obligations. When I am brave enough to leave the house in a heel, that always seems to be the day I walk the dogs up a muddy hill or need to reorganize the showroom, so I've become a bit of a realist when it comes to my shoe height.
